Sunrise Resort is on Gili Air's east beach, about a ten-minute walk from the harbour. As the name suggests, it faces Lombok and Mount Rinjani for sunrise. Its biggest advantage is the snorkelling: a reef with colourful fish and turtles lies within about 30 metres of the beach and is reachable at both high and low tide, which is unusual on Gili Air.
Rooms range from deluxe bungalows by the pool to sea-view suites, some with upstairs open-air lounges with fans, hammocks and beanbags. There are shady pools, and breakfast is included. Reviews often mention the shallow, shaded beach as ideal for small children. Le Cirque, the resort's beachfront restaurant, serves breakfast through dinner, and snorkel gear can be rented next door.
Booking direct through the website is usually the best rate. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and wear fins or reef shoes over the shallows, as the coral starts close to the beach and is easily damaged.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
