Karma Kayak sits on the beach at the northern tip of Gili Trawangan, well away from the busy harbour area. It is a calm place to spend a few hours: tables and beanbags on the sand, a breezy open-sided dining room, and clear, shallow water in front where turtles are often seen.
The menu is built for sharing, with a selection of Indonesian tapas-style small plates that let you try several local dishes at once, plus grilled seafood, hearty breakfasts and burgers that regulars rate highly. The sangria is a house favourite. Prices are reasonable for a beachfront spot.
It opens daily from 07:00 to 21:30. It makes a good stop when cycling round the island, or a base for a swim and snorkel before lunch. Sunset is visible from this end of the island, though the classic sunset bars are a little further round on the west coast. Call ahead if you want to reserve a beach table for a group.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
