The Banyan Tree is a café on the main beach road with three places to sit: wooden benches on the sand facing Gili Meno and Lombok, a balcony over the street, and an air-conditioned room upstairs for the hottest part of the day. It is a reliable breakfast and lunch stop and one of the best options on the island for vegans and vegetarians.
The menu covers shakshuka, the signature Banyan breakfast with mushrooms and Parmesan, avocado toast, wraps, salads, zucchini lasagne and smoothie bowls, plus matcha drinks and well-made coffee. A counter of baked goods and dairy-free sweets near the till is worth a look. Portions are generous and staff are happy to adjust dishes.
It opens daily from 07:00 to 21:00. Early breakfast at a beach table is the best experience, before the strip gets busy. Some cooked dishes take a while at peak times, so order early if you are heading off on a snorkelling trip.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
