Fish Bones Warung is a large, open-sided seafood restaurant on Jl. Raya Kuta, easy to spot at night by its ice display of the day's catch and the charcoal grill at the front. Long rows of wooden tables make it a practical choice for groups.
The routine is simple: pick your fish, whether snapper, mahi-mahi, grouper or trevally, plus squid or prawns, and it is marinated and grilled over coals, then served with rice, green beans and a choice of sambals. Prices are by weight and are reasonable for the area. Indonesian dishes such as chicken or beef rendang and nasi goreng are available for those who don't want seafood.
It opens from late morning to about 10pm, and evenings are the best time, when the grill is busiest and the fish freshest. Check the weight and price before your fish is cooked, and allow time for grilling. Card payment may be limited, so carry cash.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
