Markisa is a Mediterranean restaurant set inside the Rawa Lombok guesthouse, a short walk from Kuta Beach. Guests eat either in a warm, timber-lined dining room that opens onto the garden or up on the rooftop, where tables sit beside a small swimming pool.
The menu changes regularly and is built on produce from local organic farmers and fishermen. Expect tomato crostini, grilled sardines, anchovy toast, octopus ragù, flank steak and pasta, with a tuna steak in a buttery soy sauce that many reviewers rate as the best dish in town. Homemade sourdough arrives at the table, and breakfast dishes such as avocado, tomato and basil toast are served in the morning.
It opens daily from 08:00 to 22:00. Because it is tucked inside a guesthouse it is easy to walk past, so look for the Rawa Lombok sign on Jl. Pariwisata Pantai Kuta. Service is attentive and the atmosphere is calm, which makes it a good choice for an unhurried dinner.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
