Nasi balap puyung is one of Lombok's signature Sasak dishes, named after the village of Puyung in Central Lombok. This branch of Inaq Esun, a well-known name for the dish, sits in the Bazar Mandalika food and shopping strip on Jl. Pariwisata Pantai Kuta, making it the easiest place for visitors to try it.

A serving is a mound of rice on a banana leaf with spicy shredded chicken (ayam suwir), crispy fried soybeans, fried chicken or offal and a very hot sambal. It is cheap, filling and properly spicy, so ask for less chilli if you are not used to it. Jars of sambal and toppings are sold to take home, and traditional drinks such as wedang uwuh are on offer.

Open daily from 9am to 8pm, it is a good lunch stop on the way to or from the beach. The small dining area is simple and service is friendly. Orders can also be placed through a local delivery app.

Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
