Rumah Makan Doa Ibu is Kuta's go-to Padang restaurant, a long, simple room on Jl. Pariwisata Pantai Kuta with a glass-fronted counter stacked with bowls of West Sumatran dishes. It is run by two women, one local and one from Sumatra, and is busy with locals buying takeaway throughout the day.
You point at what you want and it is served on rice: slow-cooked beef rendang is the star, alongside jackfruit curry (gulai nangka), fried and curried chicken, eggs in sambal, cassava leaves and perkedel. Visitors who have eaten Padang food across Indonesia rate the rendang here highly. A full plate with a hot or iced tea usually comes to under 50,000 rupiah.
It opens daily from 9am to 9pm. Food is cooked in batches in the morning and kept at room temperature, as is normal for Padang food, so go at lunchtime for the freshest choice. There is no air conditioning. Cash only.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
