Tunak Resort sits inside the Taman Wisata Alam Gunung Tunak nature reserve at Mertak, on the headland beyond Gerupuk and Bumbang, roughly 30 minutes east of Kuta town. It is a secluded, self-contained stay: guests tend to eat most meals at the resort, and the setting is wild coastline and forest rather than a beach strip.
Accommodation is in one-bedroom private pool villas of about 167 square metres, arranged in rows on the slope. Cliff-front villas have direct ocean views and a bathtub facing the sea; second-row ocean-view and jungle villas sit higher up, and there is a family villa with a kitchenette. The resort runs its own activities programme, including snorkelling and spearfishing trips, hiking trails to the reserve's viewpoints, horse riding and the Mayura Wellness Spa, and it supports turtle conservation releases.
Choose it for privacy, views and nature rather than nightlife. You will want a driver or the resort's transport for trips into Kuta. Sunset from the cliff villas is a highlight.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
