Warung Chef Satar is a small, simple warung a short walk off Jl. Pariwisata Pantai Kuta, run by Satar himself, who cooks every plate to order in a compact open kitchen. There are only four or five tables and a deliberately short menu of around six dishes, which keeps quality high and is a big part of why it has become one of the best-rated local spots in Kuta.
Regulars single out the nasi goreng with a runny fried egg, an unusually good mie goreng, a coconut curry with Thai leanings and Satar's grilled ayam taliwang, the spicy Lombok chicken dish. Gado-gado and tempeh dishes cover vegetarians, and noodles can be made without chicken. Portions are big and prices are firmly local.
It opens from 1pm until late, so it works best for a late lunch or dinner. Because everything is cooked fresh by one person, expect a short wait when the tables fill. Drinks are limited, so diners often bring their own. Pay in cash.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
