Warung Jawa 1 ('local food, local price', as the sign says) is a long-running warung in the Banjar Mandalika area of Kuta, run by a Javanese family. It is a basic room with chequered tablecloths and a handful of tables, and it is popular with locals as well as budget travellers.

The cooking is home-style Indonesian with a Javanese accent. Vegetable dishes are a strength, notably urap (steamed greens with spiced coconut) and gado-gado, and the ayam bakar (grilled chicken) with sambal, nasi goreng and pecel lele are reliable. Fresh orange juice and iced tea are cheap, and most mains cost a few dollars.

It opens daily from about 8am to 10pm. Seating is limited and food is cooked fresh, so it can fill up and dishes take a little while at peak times. It is a good place to try everyday Indonesian food without tourist mark-ups. Bring cash.

Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
