Warung Makan SMS is a small family-run warung on Jl. Gerupuk, on the way into the fishing and surf village of Gerupuk east of Kuta. In an area increasingly filled with surf cafés, it is one of the few places still serving everyday Indonesian food at local prices, and surfers staying in Gerupuk often end up eating there most evenings.
Food is laid out buffet-style for nasi campur, so you choose rice and a selection of curries, vegetables, tempeh, egg and fried chicken, and pay for what is on the plate. Spicy chicken skewers are a highlight, and there is iced tea (es teh) and simple drinks. Some dishes use local ingredients that may be unfamiliar, which is part of the appeal.
It opens from 7am to 9pm daily, so it suits breakfast before a boat out to the breaks as well as dinner. It is a good stop after sunset at nearby Bukit Merese. Pay in cash.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
