Kebon Kupi sits on a hillside in Jorong, above Sembalun Bumbung, and its main draw is the view: a wide panorama over the patchwork farms of the Sembalun valley to the surrounding ridges, with a glass-floored deck for looking straight down. It is one of the busiest cafés in Sembalun, with more than 900 Google reviews.
The coffee is grown locally, and the premium Sembalun arabica is the one to order; bags of beans and ground coffee are sold to take home. The food menu covers Indonesian favourites such as nasi goreng, ayam serundeng and tempe mendoan, plus snacks. Facilities are good for a mountain café, with clean toilets, a prayer room and plenty of parking for cars and scooters. Some evenings bring live music, which suits groups more than anyone after a quiet coffee.
Expect to pay a little more than at village warungs for the setting. Go in the morning, when the air is clear and the peaks are most likely to be cloud-free. It is closed for Friday prayers around midday.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
