Bale Jaje is a modern café and bakery in Cakranegara, close to the Mayura water palace and Pura Meru, two of Mataram's main historic sights. 'Jaje' is the Sasak word for snacks and cakes, and the glass counters are filled with cakes, pastries and breads baked on site.
Inside, the space is bright and contemporary, with wooden furniture, exposed brick and plants, plus some outdoor seating. Alongside the bakery there is a full coffee menu and a selection of light meals, making it a handy stop for breakfast or an afternoon break while sightseeing. It holds a 4.5 Google rating from nearly 1,400 reviews and 4.7 on Tripadvisor.
It opens daily from 08:00 to 22:00. Air-conditioning and reliable seating make it one of the more comfortable places in the city to pause during the midday heat. Take a box of cakes away for later; the selection is particularly good in the morning, and staff can recommend local-style kue alongside the European pastries.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
