Dapoer Sasak is a relaxed, shaded restaurant on Jalan Udayana, the tree-lined boulevard in west Mataram that comes alive in the evenings with food stalls and joggers. The menu is dedicated to Sasak cooking, the cuisine of Lombok's indigenous people, and it is a good place for a first introduction to the island's food.
Expect ayam taliwang, grilled or fried chicken with chilli sauce; plecing kangkung; beberuk terong, a raw aubergine and chilli relish; sate pusut; and grilled fish and seafood. Dishes arrive quickly and prices are low. The setting, with open-sided pavilions and greenery, stays surprisingly cool even in the middle of the day, and the restaurant is popular with local families and groups.
It opens daily from 10:00 to 22:00. Portions of some dishes such as the soups are on the small side, so order a few plates to share. Parking is easy, and the restaurant sits close to Mataram's Islamic Centre and the Udayana evening market. Follow its Instagram for current menus and promotions.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
