Nasi balap puyung is one of Lombok's signature everyday dishes, named after the village of Puyung in Central Lombok: a mound of white rice topped with shredded, deep-fried chicken in a hot chilli sauce, crisp fried soybeans, potato and sometimes long beans. RM. Rinjani on Jalan Adi Sucipto in Ampenan is a convenient place to try it without driving out to Puyung itself.
The restaurant is modest from the outside, but the nasi balap puyung komplit is properly made, with a sambal that is both spicy and salty in the traditional way. Prices are very low, making it an easy lunch for budget travellers. Ask for the soybeans to be swapped for vegetables if you prefer, but be clear when ordering, as reviewers note requests can be missed.
It opens from 09:00 to 21:30, a little later on Sundays, and also takes orders for boxed rice for groups. It is close to the old Selaparang airport area and a short drive from Ampenan's old port and colonial-era shophouses.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
