Warung Monkey Forest is an open-sided timber warung in Orong Gerisak, the tourism hamlet of Tetebatu, close to the forest where black langur monkeys are often seen. With more than 600 Google reviews at 4.8, it is one of the village's busiest places to eat, and it fills up at lunch with groups coming back from rice-field walks.
The food is straightforward, freshly cooked Indonesian fare. Reviewers single out the chicken satay with peanut sauce, spring rolls, chicken and tofu curries and olah-olah, a Sasak vegetable dish in coconut sauce. Staff are good at handling dietary requests, and vegans can usually be accommodated, including fried banana made without cheese or ice cream. Service is quick and portions are generous for the price.
The warung also runs cooking classes, typically in the evening, covering dishes such as egg curry, lumpia and dadar gulung. Book a class a day ahead. It is open daily from 07:00 to 22:00.
Message ahead in peak season: July, August and the Christmas holidays fill up fast.
